Melanie R

Melanie is all about promoting self acceptance, positivity and all things Selena. Continue reading below to see what makes Melanie, Melanie :)

First and foremost what do you want my readers to know about you?

Ahh you're putting me on the spot. Well I'm first generation Mexican American. 22 years old born and bred in NYC! I love corn! Especially elote. I love love love Selena. I have two kids, a dog and kitten. They're my pride and joy, coming home to them is top 5 best feelings in the world. Hmm what else, I love the rain but not in a depressing way. Those random moments when it's raining out of nowhere, those are the best.

OK Mel, lets talk about NYC. How much has growing up in New York affected your personality and fashion?

Growing up in New York City has definitely  made me the woman I am today. This city is so diverse and I've been exposed to so much! From people, to art and culture I feel like I have access to a great deal of things. Also, fashion in New York is out of this world, you can really do whatever you want here fashion wise and not have to worry about looking odd.
You said earlier that you were a huge fan of Selena, would you say you look up to her fashion wise?

Of course! She inspired me to be myself. Selena had such an amazing
soul and impeccable style but always stayed true to herself. Her style represented who she was as a person.

So your style is a little bit inspired by Selena how else would you describe your style?

My style is a little bit of everything. I don't have a set "look". I love the 80s and 90s era of fashion so that plays a huge part in my style. Honestly it all depends on my mood. I love flowy clothing, anything that makes me feel like I'm running in a field full of painted flowers. Sort of like the scene from What Dream May Come, I suggest you watch that movie if you haven't already.

How has your style changed over the years?

I went from wearing tight ass skinny jeans with Dunks, chick who would tie her hair with a shoelace and have my bangs gelled down to my forehead. It was popping back then. When I entered high school I became a bit preppy, slacks, oxford and blazers. Now I'm just chilling, wearing what I want when I want.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to experiment with their style?

Just go for it. Don't listen or give in to any negativity people have to say, just do you boo!

Did you ever have a piece of clothing you were never a fan of but now wear?

I would never wear sandals, like ever! I hated my toes. Not like they were crusty or anything I was just never a fan of them, I'd hide them from everyone. It sounds corny but my partner made me appreciate my toes. He liked them which made me less self conscious so I ended up loving them. Having someone who loves what you believe are your flaws is a great feeling because you appreciate them (your partner) more and also appreciate your "flaws" more.

Knowing what you know today, what advice would you give your younger self?

I would tell her not to worry about anything, pay no mind to what others think. Never let the devil in. Don't ever let anyone damage her kind soul. Always stay as the lovely Melanie she's been since day 1.

What is the last thing you bought?

A cheeseburger that was hella’ good with a side of French fries and a Sprite. They didn't have anymore Dr.Pepper :(

Wild Wish?
Travel around the world so my Kids can brag about their dope ass mom and all the stuff she got to do all over the world.
